Once important for Hangzhou's defense and water supply, Donghe is an old city moat. Today, you'll find a picturesque spot adorned with parks and scenic areas. Sequoias, ginkgos, camphors, cherry blossoms, myrtles, crabapples, birds, flowers and evergreen trees are just a hint at the picturesque landscape that awaits.
Nineteen bridges, ancient cultural relics, and historic buildings stand testament to the city's storied past. Locals engaged in early morning tai chi, conversation, exercise, mahjong, dance, or even music-making, highlight the river's importance in their daily lives.
I highly recommend taking the Line 7 Waterbus from either Baziqiao near Wulin Square or Meihua near Hefang Street. This 45-minute boat ride allows you to soak in the tranquil views from the water. Boats accommodate up to 8 passengers at a time.
You can use your city bus card or Alipay Transport to pay the 3RMB fare. Baziqiao station 'might' accept cash payments at its booth (I didn't check).
Whether you choose to stroll along its banks or embark on a scenic waterbus adventure, this enchanting waterway offers a fascinating half-day excursion.
